BP Oil Spill Information

Updated 8/17/10

Well, a lot happened during our vacation! BP's static kill procedure has completely stopped the flow of oil from the Deepwater Horizon well -- there has been no further leaking of oil into the gulf since 7/15!The ultimate plan over the next few weeks is to complete the relief well drilling and "bottom kill" procedure to seal this well forever!

At Sunset Reflections Vacation Rentals we are discontinuing these updates because the spotters can find no more surface oil anywhere and NOAA has discontinued publishing the Trajectory Maps. Our beaches and waters are clear and beautiful. There was a small spattering of tar balls and oil product discovered recently at the tip of St. Joseph Peninsula -- and it was quickly cleaned up.

Winds and current forecasts are no longer relevant as there is little surface oil anywhere.

The federal fishing closure off Mexico Beach and west of the Cape has been lifted and our fisherman have no real restrictions. Fishing off the beach and scalloping and fishing in the bay are all open.

Our local Health Department and the Environmental Protection Agency are still monitoring the water and air quality closely. If these agencies consider anything to be hazardous, they will close the beaches and/or issue a health advisory.

In the event of a beach closure or a health advisory issued, we will refund all payments in full and waive any cancellation fees.

The scallops in St. Joseph Bay have been plentiful -- we have harvested our limits several times within 200 feet of our dock! We're hearing that the scallops are thick everywhere in the bay!

This oil spill has created a great deal of uncertainty for us all. We're planning to handle this difficult period as expeditiously as possible and we want our valued guests to feel more comfortable. If you have any further questions please let us know. We look forward to your visit and we hope to have beautiful beaches and pristine waters for you to enjoy.
